Dan Tisch: PR Exec & Venture Philanthropist
What makes you unique?
I try to strike a balance in all things, and by that I don’t mean the work/life balance ‘cliche’. I’ve been both a public sector and a private sector person through my life, and I am passionate about shrinking the gap between profit and non-profit, bringing the best practices from each to benefit the other.
How would others describe you?
I believe they’d say I’m creative, reasonably articulate and strategic. In business I try to focus on both the big-picture ideas and the fine details that make a difference.
What do you consider to be your biggest achievement?
It’s all about relationships – those I have built with people that I love and care about in both my personal and professional lives, and the way that has allowed me to contribute to the community.
How would you want your own story to inspire others?
It’s important in your career to think both what is the right thing to do and what will be its impact on people. In PR, if you pay attention to your relationships, your reputation will take care of itself. If you want to make a difference, you first have to understand what your passions are in life, figure out what you’re good at, and then think about why your work is meaningful to the broader community.
How have your passions and interests changed as you’ve matured?
In my twenties I was all about public policy (I worked for the government), where I wanted to make a difference; in my thirties I became focused on building my business and career in communications. Now in my forties I am clearly focused on both. I want to realize my vision for my business, continuing to make it a place that sets high standards and attracts and retains the best people, and use this success to contribute more money, time and talent to causes that I care about.
I find I am more conscious of time now. As I age, I have much more of a do-it-now mentality, so I took up guitar lessons this year. The hobbies I love and am determined to put more time into are music, tennis, photography and travel.
Tell us your about favourite career highlight
Recently winning the Mid-size Agency of The Year award from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) is top of mind. Earlier in my career, when I was working with government, going to the G7 Summit was a big highlight. It was both exciting and motivational for me.
What would you like to be remembered for?
Through my two children: for them to become good citizens, to live their lives well and to be happy in what they do, but also to do something meaningful that benefits other people. For myself: to have left every enterprise that I have touched – whether business or personal – a little more successful.
