Oh, to be a Grandmother

Geri is about to become a grandmother. In January, that is. She’s 58 now and her daughter is 32. Geri has surprised herself, and all of those around her, at how much she is looking forward to this. She told us all about it.

[Have you noticed how much older this current fecund generation is than we were – back then, 27 was considered a “geriatric birth”?]

“The day my daughter told me the good news, I was elated, and my mind filled with memories of my two pregnancies and the delight I felt each time, glowing in the knowledge that I was fully feminine, beautiful and desirable. Conversely Becky, my daughter, hates her pregnancy, calls my Grandson to be “The Alien”, and can’t wait to give birth. Usually adorable and outgoing, Becky has become a ‘B’ with an ‘itch’ ever since that first bout of morning sickness. I have to remind her that, come January, she’ll have a baby, but maybe no husband, if she doesn’t smarten up. Ah, hormones!”

And how about Geri? “I am excited and looking forward to this new addition to the family, but it has also had me rushing to the mirror for signs of more wrinkles round my eyes… are there a few more grey hairs appearing? … I’m going to have to color my hair a little more often. This is a real passage in life, and it has you wondering about yourself, for sure. When I asked my husband how old he thought I looked, he replied, “It doesn’t matter, darling, I love you any way.”

She didn’t like the answer, not the “any way” part, at all. She asks herself if her younger and extremely handsome husband will still find her desirable with the “Grandma” label.
“And you know what?” she continued. “I guess, like any other Mom, I worry about the actual birth. Becky is my firstborn, still my baby, and I remember the exhausting pain of childbirth. If only I could do this for her… but this is her life journey. I am just thrilled to be on the same train.

“What can I do? I’m being practical. I’ve painted the nursery, erected and painted the change table (even though I used to change her diapers laid on a towel on the bed). I’m thrilled that she is including me in shopping trips and decorating projects, and I can’t wait to hold Jak in my arms for the first time, I’m going to be a ‘hip’ Grandma and love every minute of it. I already do.”
