No-make-up make-up in 5 minutes

by Roz Mogani

My work revolves around real women, real beauty, real life and real budgets. Having worked on numerous faces – from makeovers on City TV’s CityLine to celebrities and women of all ages and stages of health, I have learned a few tricks that I am excited to pass on to you. In my experience there are a few issues that continue to intimidate us.

Eyeliner “It runs down my face, I can’t make it thin enough”.

Concealer and foundation. “It gets into creases and emphasizes my lines – makes me look older,”. Or, “How can I wear makeup when I have the sweats randomly throughout the day?”

My five-minute no make-up look, perfect for anyone especially women ‘of a certain age’, goes like this: face, eyebrows, eyes, cheeks, lips.

Face

When choosing a foundation or tinted moisturizer (remember it should contain an SPF), match to skin tone of neck and décolleté. If you have more than a shade or two difference, pick a shade that’s in between. Use tinted moisturizer instead of foundation or alternatively mix a bit of foundation with your moisturizer (for a lighter look) over face and neck. Creamy concealer in a few shades lighter, applied with a light hand on and under eyes before your eye gel or cream is completely absorbed, is best to avoid creasing. Extend concealer up to brow and blend down and out on to cheekbones. Dust with a powder brush, and blot powder all over, but try and avoid right under the eye.

Eyebrows

No one is going to pay attention to the painting (our eyes) if the frame is unbalanced or unruly. It’s best to visit your aesthetician to get a flattering shape to start with. Try not to take too much hair. Instead trim the longer hairs first and then you will have a better idea of what needs to be cleaned up under the brow. Fill in lightly with a shadow a shade that matches your brow with an angle brush (synthetic).

Eyes

With a fluffy eye-shadow brush lightly blend in crease with either a flesh tone shadow that is a few shades darker than your skin tone, or the shadow you used for your brow can be applied in crease and outer third. Using the same angle brush, apply your brow shadow on upper and bottom base of lashes – difficult to mess up, and won’t run down your face. Apply mascara starting at base of lashes, holding at the base every few strokes so it draws and sets the lashes up and out. Talk about instant eyelift! Apply a very light coat on bottom lashes, if at all.

Cheeks

Dust and sweep same flesh tone as used for eyes across cheeks with either your powder brush or a blush brush.

Lips

Apply lip balm. Line and fill lips with similar shade flesh tone liner. Follow up with flesh tone lipstick and/or gloss.

Face Notes

Exfoliate and moisturize daily from head to toe. Always tap brush to remove residual powder after dipping into product. Have tissue handy to pat face as needed throughout the day or evening

Never take eye rolling personally (even when you are in the middle of a hot flash) when it comes from an adolescent child. This too shall pass. Now if only I can remember where I put my keys…

What do you notice first on a woman: hair or shoes? I’m in the hair first camp because it really does make a big statement about us, and within the first two seconds of meeting. Bad hair can drain your confidence – we rely on our hairstyles to make us feel, well, great.

Admittedly, with peri-menopause, hair texture seems to change – hormonal changes can cause hair to fall out, so it gets thinner. But these days there are no rules about hair length and hair style for baby boomers any more.

Canadian women spend a lot on hair – products and styling – to enhance our look. Have you noticed a big gap between what different stylists charge us?

What a difference a hairstyle can make

Getting to the point – a war between stylists. Not just on price, you understand, but on what you end up with for your money. I had a shocking surprise recently. It compelled me to ask can you tell the difference between a $500 style and a $45 do? Here’s a test … take a look at these two photos, and see if you can spot which cost the most. (These are not salon standard, retouched professional photos, so apologies for the quality … as long as you can see the hair.)

Guess. Then go to Pag2 2 (click below) and I’ll tell you which is the $500 Yorkville style and which is the $45 one.

Masking Your Midriff

by Lynda E. Jean

Our body shapes and proportions are genetic, meaning we have no control over our height, bone structure and predisposition to gain or lose weight. The better we know and understand our body, the more empowered we will feel and be able to work with it strategically.

After 50, many of us wonder how to hide an expanding midriff. The answer is what image consultants call a ‘third layer’.

The third layer can be a jacket or cardigan-type sweater that not only covers the middle but also creates a vertical line from the top to the bottom of the garment, creating a longer and slimmer appearance.

The length of the third layer is also an important consideration. A safe length for a third layer is right at the leg break, which also covers the derriere. To find your leg break, simply lift your knee, and the middle of your front thigh that bends is your leg break, about four inches above your crotch.

If you suffer from hot flashes and cannot imagine the thought of wearing a third layer, then wear a long top that is not too tight and flows over your body.

About black … black is a difficult colour to wear successfully because of its severity. In the workplace, black is powerful, best worn in a suit. It suggests power and leadership. People with darker complexions wear black best, because the darkness of their natural skin tone can complete with it; otherwise, black will wear you. Navy blue is just as effective as black and works for almost every skin tone.

In the first view (photos: Oprah.com, Kelly – Oprah’s stylist) this woman is carrying a bag that is neither age-appropriate nor proportionate to her body. She has probably chosen to wear black because black is our favourite slimming colour.

As you can see, this woman’s makeover has created an unbelievable transformation. She is still wearing black and the third layer, but her frumpy clothes have been changed to more current, upbeat styles. Her child-like bag has been exchanged for a more attractive bag that still provides the same amount of ample space.

What is also remarkable is the beautiful hair cut, which makes her appear much younger. I cannot emphasize the value of a good cut and style. In addition, many women change the colour of their hair in an attempt to jazz up their appearance. Often it is a colour that either conflicts with their natural complexion or washes them out. Nature did not make a mistake – our best hair colour is our natural hair colour. Instead, we can create excitement with a great hair style, make up, clothing and accessories. The best part of this woman’s transformation, however, is her smile and look of confidence. This is so important for our emotional well-being.

If you have not done so, invest in a colour and style analysis to discover how to enhance your best features.

Embrace yourself and enjoy this part of your life. Now is the time for you.

The beauty of getting older is that we have matured, lived life, and can usually laugh at the things that used to embarrass us. The down side is that our bodies are forever changing. Menopause, bearing children and hormonal changes can – and do – wreak havoc.

Even though we may eat less and exercise, somehow we look different from our 21-year old selves. Fear not, because the trick to dressing strategically and looking like you still have the youthful shape you once had can easily be achieved.

Our body shapes and proportions are genetic, meaning we have no control over our height, bone structure and predisposition to gain or lose weight. The better we know and understand our body, the more empowered we feel, and the more able to work with it strategically. Getting your skirt length right is simple if you follow these pointers.

6 ways to choose skirt length

The best skirt/dress lengths should end either at the top of the knee or the bottom of the knee.

Never break up the knee.

If you are petite (5’4” or less), you will appear taller with the shorter length.

If you have short legs in proportion to the rest of your body, then the shorter length will also give the illusion of longer legs because you are showing more leg.

Another tactic for appearing taller and slimmer is to keep your skirts more narrow than wide.

Skirts above the knees should only be worn for sports or very casual attire.

Shifting the emphasis

(The photos are from Oprah.com, styled by Oprah’s stylist, Kelly.) The picture on the far left emphasizes how a break in our body draws the eye to it. This particular woman hated her ankles, and was attempting to hide them by wearing dark socks and shoes. What she created was the exact opposite. After her make over, she is exposing her legs by wearing neutral hose that cover her knees. Her legs are barely noticeable, because her upper body is dressed in colours and styles that enhance her natural look. The brown and gold colour choices work with her warm complexion and the animal print compliments her personality. Not only does she look attractive and taller, but also sexy! She is strategically dressed so that our eyes focus on her face and upper body. This is an excellent example of how we can optimize our best features by using the best colours for our complexion and the best styles for our body shape, proportion, and personality.

Lovelier, the second time around

by Elizabeth Mason

Photo: Scott Downey

The second and third time brides have most probably already lived the fantasy of their first traditional wedding gown. Now, in consideration of a more seasoned spirit, they lean towards an elegant or sexy cocktail dress, that’s powerful and uniquely different than the gown they chose for their first wedding. No longer feeling compelled to blow the baby’s college fund on a single expensive designer bridal gown, the second-timers are more inclined to consider value and the potential to wear their vintage dress or gown for future occasions.

Because they are having this wedding just for them, second-time brides are not as concerned with choosing a gown that will wow their family and friends. They just want to dazzle their new husband. With second-time brides, there seem to be no ‘sides to their box’.

If you are considering a vintage gown for your wedding you need an open mind. If a gown has ‘good bones’, for example, but needs a little updating, then having courage and imagination – and working with a vintage specialist - is the secret to a beautiful and uniquely-your-own vintage bridal gown.

Selecting for age and proportion

Photo: Scott Downey

The dress needs to be age appropriate, as many second-timers are in their forties, fifties or more. The dress must be figure flattering, and must transition from the ceremony to the reception with both functionality and beauty. Often times the brides will opt for a variation of white, in creams and ivory to embrace the tradition of the wedding, but not the symbolism of the ‘blushing bride’ in pure white.

One of the only restrictions when choosing to wear vintage is the issue of sizing. Women were much smaller in past eras, and there are limited amounts of larger sizes especially from the 1920s through the early 1940s. Bear in mind also that many eras required a specific type of undergarment to structure a figure to fit the cut and drape of a particular style – such as the restrictive corsets worn during the ‘New Look’ era. That being said, I am never opposed to altering a gown to compensate for a more contemporary and comfortable undergarment. (continues on next page)

Subtle nip and tuck

There are two arguments. Age naturally, or, do all you can to look your best for as long as you can.

True, genetics play a part in how we age. However, for most people over 50, hormone changes, stress and gravity conspire together to orchestrate an increasingly rapid decline in our faces – bags, lines, wrinkles and loss of volume, with dryness added in for good (or bad) measure.

Fillers, lasers, Botox and Thermage are some of the non-surgical options, and they can be very effective. When you want a more lasting result, or have a specific problem area you want to work on, surgery may be the answer. Many people are opposed to vanity surgery, but surely this is a personal choice.

Long gone are the days of dramatic – and weird-looking – facelifts, in Toronto at least. This is Tempo Toronto’s look at upper and lower eyelid surgery. Performed by Dr. Trevor Born, Toronto’s favourite cosmetic surgeon (who also offers plenty of non-surgical options), he has mastered the art of subtlety.

With eyelid surgery there are three parts: remove the puffiness, fill in the hollows with micro fat grafting, a technique he has perfected, and tighten the skin. Though intricate surgery, the results he produces have everyone guessing that you’ve either been on a great vacation, or are getting plenty of great sleep. Apart from closest family and friends, not one of our subject’s network knows that she has had ‘her eyes done’.

The surgical experience

Apparently, Dr. Born provides excellence in patient care and preparation. Here’s what we were told …

Thorough and considerate consultation, pre-surgery. All options covered, all risks discussed.

Day of surgery: bags, sunken hollows and drooping eyelids

Detailed preparation for surgery and recovery. No surprises on the day, or afterwards.

Consistent excellence in patient care for several weeks before and after surgery. “Feels like you’re the only person who matters there.”

Dr. Born focuses on optimal health before surgery, and is a believer in homeopathy and effective supplementation to position you for rapid healing.

Extent of bruising, pain and swelling, and downtime after procedure exactly as described.

Two months after surgery, wide-eyed

Back in circulation after two weeks, swelling and bruising gone and great result obvious in less than a month.

Dr. Born cares deeply about his work, his patients and their results.

The results

You can make your own judgment from the photographs (all unretouched, all without make-up). The important thing to know is that the subject was thrilled. Was it worth it? “The pain and suffering was minimal, my bags are gone and my top eyelids don’t droop any more,” she told us. “I was really concerned that I would lose my smile lines, but I didn’t – they are just a lot softer now. The best part is that I don’t look ‘done’, just naturally refreshed. I’m very happy with the result.”

Or simply just look at designer stuff.

Of all the runway shows we saw, the Lundström Collection shone, as far as Tempo Toronto was concerned. These are wearable clothes, and we loved them all.

The polished brochure (from which we lifted the photographs below) describes the collection thus: “Lundstrom Collection unfolds with a timeless and chic debut for Fall Winter 2010. Coats are classic in luxurious fabrics with a focus on swing silhouettes. Sweaters are sweet in silk, cashmere and merino wool. Suiting is structured in menswear plaids and Donegal tweeds, while blouses are pretty with soft ties and gathers at the neck. Easily transitioned from day to night, the collection is charmed with understated elegance and a polished modern appeal.”

All so true. There’s not much we can add to that.

There were 39 items on the runway, and we’ve selected just five outfits here because space is limited. The Lundström Collection is owned and operated by Eleventh Floor Apparel Ltd., 255 Wicksteed Avenue in Toronto. You can see Lundström creations at eleven in Toronto, which is at 116 Cumberland Street in Yorkville – though obviously not the Fall Winter 2010 Collection, yet. This is a preview to whet your appetite.

Lamenting lashes no more

“Give it to me with all speed!”

Well, what would you say if Toronto’s leading cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Trevor Born, told you he had a product that could help grow long sweeping eyelashes in three months, and show an improvement in just four weeks? Admittedly, they weren’t the shortest eyelashes ever, but Christina was convinced that her almost 60-year old eyelashes were markedly stubbier than they had been in her glorious, wide-eyed youth.

One of Toronto’s most respected Cosmetic Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Trevor Born (a clinical lecturer and instructor of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Training, with expertise in the fields of facial rejuvenation and body contouring) has the skinny on a miracle liquid that will, within three months, render your eyelashes to the state they were many decades ago, or perhaps even better. It is a pharmaceutical creation, which means you have to get it from a doctor, and you have to apply it daily for 12-16 weeks to get the optimum effect. There’s some after-growth maintenance too.

We’ve been trying out Bimatroprost by Ocular Esthetics ever since Toronto’s leading cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Trevor Born, clued in a Tempo Toronto team member that he could help her grow the long sweeping eyelashes of her youth, in three months. We took pictures to document the progress. All of the ones shown here are with naked eyelashes – no mascara, no product, no anything.

Dr. Trevor Born is a clinical lecturer and instructor of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Training, with expertise in the fields of facial rejuvenation and body contouring. In his practice, he can offer a product (called Latisse in the United States) that potentially returns eyelashes to the state they were in your twenties, or perhaps even better. It is a pharmaceutical creation, which means you have to get it from a doctor, and you have to apply it daily for 12-16 weeks to get the optimum effect. It is not for everyone, your eyes must be healthy, and you have to apply the product with care and attention.

There’s some after-growth maintenance too (continued application every two or three days). Dr. Born discussed all the benefits, how to use the product, and all the risks – in his inimitable, caring fashion – and we were good to go.

Each day you have to apply a thin line of the liquid along the base of your (clean) upper eyelashes. That’s it! We promised you the results after three months. And here they are. It really works. (In case you’re wondering, we did pay for the product.) Stunning. Not bad for eyelashes that have been around for almost six decades!

The dirty blond colour that Rosa Galati from Woodbridge had originally used on her hair was very close to her skin tone, which gave her complexion a washed out appearance. The style was also rather dated. Daniel Occhiuto of Salon Daniel Luis encouraged her to go back to her natural hair colour. By the time the old colour had grown out, Rosa could boast an alluring silver grey which, as it has less pigment, would bring more warmth and colour to her skin tone – a more vibrant and youthful look altogether.

Because Rosa’s facial features are soft in nature, Daniel gave Rosa a clean cut with a defined perimeter to lend strength to her soft features. With prominent or sharp features, this kind of cut could look too harsh. The restyling was started on wet hair, and the last part of the cut was done on dry hair. Daniel provided texture in the style, yet left it soft with a little feathering. He cut long, sweeping bangs.

Before quickly styling with the help of a blowdyer, UNA multi-use styling gel was lightly spritzed on the hair. Afterwards, Silker polish was applied to give the hair shine and to complete this chic look, with and without Rosa’s trendy new frames.

Rosa left the salon with a chic hair makeover that requires minimal time and effort to style. Wash, blow and go!
